The Sacrament of Holy Communion is the source and summit of the Christian life, so the first time a child receives the Eucharist a momentous occasion. Receiving the Blessed Sacrament makes the child a partaker in the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Our Lord, Jesus Christ!
First Communion for children traditionally takes place in the springtime during the Easter season. Usually, at seven or eight years old, First Communicants have reached the age of reason and their First Communion is preceded by their First Reconciliation. At Mass, the First Communicants receive the Eucharist for the first time, marking a milestone in their life of faith and providing them with the grace they need to draw closer to Jesus.
To celebrate such an important day, many families gather with loved ones following Mass, often giving memorable gifts to the First Communicant.
